To what extent the Marzano basic Thinking skills are available in questions of science Textbooks and Tests in the preparatory stage

Abstract

     The aim of this study is to determine to what extent Marzano          basic thinking skills are available in questions of science Textbooks and Tests in the preparatory stage.

    To do that, The researcher prepared a list of the Marzano basic Thinking skills that should be available in questions of science Textbooks and Tests in the preparatory stage containing 8 main skills(Focusing, Information Gathering, Remembering,, Organizing, Analyzing ,Generation, Integrating, and Evaluating) ; and 18 subskills.

     Then, the researcher, in the light of the previous list, analyzed the questions in the three preparatory stage science textbooks, first and second terms
 ( six books 2010-2011), and final tests of   first and second terms (10 tests for every school term; with total 60 science  tests) for the  3 preparatory school  years .

The results of the study showed that:

-Concentrating on  memorization questions( 50% of question summation )

-There was   strong relation between percentage and type of       basic thinking skills that measured by questions of science Textbooks and Tests.

- There was no balance between types of  questions that measured by questions of science Textbooks and Tests

- Exactly absence questions that measure skills (Defining Problems-Setting Goals- Formulating Questions-Elaborating)

The researcher suggests that:

-There is a necessity for another view in  science books and include it all types of questions that measure       basic thinking skills in a balance way and change specifications of test paper for science test to include that skills

-Preparing guides for science teachers to help them in building questions that measure   basic thinking skills and trains them on it  

- Preparing  questions  banks  for  science  questions  that  measure      basic thinking skills to facilitate teachers use in learning and evaluation
